The 2024 Sprint Series concluded at Seoul Racecourse on Sunday May 19 and it was 50/1 outsider SSONSAL who took the spoils for the second consecutive year with a late run to hold out 2022 Korea Sprint winner EOMA EOMA by a neck in the SROA Chairman's Sprint (1200M), a race which carried international Listed status for the first time.
2023 Korea Sprint runner up BEOLMAUI STAR was sent off as favourite, but the five-year-old had an off day as despite leading, his challenge wilted early in the home straight. That led the veterans to contest the spoils as Franco Da Silva brought Ssonsal through to just see off Eoma Eoma with the nine-year-old MORFHIS a further length back in 3rd place. CC Wong rode Eoma Eoma while Johan Victoire completed an overseas jockey trifecta on Morfhis. Ssonsal is trained by Lee Sang-young and owned by Hong Jung-pyo.
All three placegetters are Korea Sprint alumni. Eoma Eoma won the international race in 2022 and then finished 5th in 2023. Morfhis was 6th in 2022 and 7th in 2023 while Ssonsal himself was 8th in 2023.
The result left EOMA EOMA as the overall winner of the three-race Sprint Series with 660 points. There was then a three-way tie for 2nd place with BEOLMAUI STAR, SOMETHING LOST and SSONSAL all on 600 points. Busan Ilbo Sprint winner RAON THE POINT was 5th on 400 points while MORFHIS was 6th with 300.
